And everyone said, "If we only live, We too will go to sea in
a Sieve -- To the hills of the Chankly Bore!"
The Jumblies --
Edward Lear
If you have not read any Edward Lear, you owe it to yourself to read
some of his stuff. He was one of the first poets to write nonsense - a
tradition that led to Ogden Nash, Lewis Caroll, and Douglas Adams,
amoung other authors that are widely read and loved today.
The Jumblies, by the way, went to sea in a sieve, and their hands
are green, and their hair is blue, and they went to sea in a sieve, they
did.
More philosophically, The Jumblies is about doing the things that you
have a passion to do, "In spite of all their friends could say." In
the quote here, they have returned from their journey, they've been
everywhere, and everyone wishes they could do the same thing. As often
happens - those who criticize the things that are new, unexplored, or
poorly understood, are often the ones who regret having missed on on
it.
