invention of a popular game, by a lady who had bestowed her name upon
it.

Another example of Dickens subtly pointing out the parochialism of one
of his characters without directly insulting him. Of course, as the
story proceeds, we see that Mr. Cruncher, with all his
simple-mindedness, is a better man than many of the educated people
around him, as is so often the case in Dickens.
